As a Newgrounds.com user, I feel compelled to contact your newsgroup after the report you did on a game hosted by Newgrounds(to save time, Im going to call it NG) called The Torture Game 2. The report was biased, making NG out to be a pack of savages that are desensitized to killing and mutilation. Your guest on the segment, Melissa Henson, was sadly misinformed. We have no proof that Violence in media is a cause for Violence in reality. Theres no study, no scan that can prove it. She acted much like Jack Johnson, the disbarred congressman who seems to vilify videogames for their "effects" on children. Which brings me to a point. 95% of the NG users are at least 13, if not much older. As such, they are able to handle gore and killing in movies, but do we vilify them? Did we bitch at Dawn Of The Dead for being gory and violent? Nooooo, we called it a great remake of the original. Im not saying that DOTD is as bad as the game, but the fact is that your guest is biased on an unbiased outlet. She's obviously never played a violent videogame for herself. They do let us act out our violent tendencies, the keyword being act. We as gamers can let anger and sadist feelings out whenever we play a videogame. The same holds true for the bit being desensitized to rape after multiple viewings. That concept is an opinion driven by one who acts like Jack Johnson. Most of my generations fathers have viewed pornographic materials at points in their lives and would readily defend against a rape in a heartbeat. Even the teenagers who view pornographic materials have an antirape stance and are sickened by the people who feel euphoric by commiting it. Her "Violence to Violence" stance is idiotic in nature. The people who view a fictional killing, for example, arent going to go out and kill someone because they saw the bad man on TV do it. A little bit of parental intervention goes a long way. Im 16, ive played the game a couple times, am personally neutral to it. I act as such because my mother laid out for me that killing a person was a terrible thing, but also understood anger and sadist feelings at times, speaking from a curiosity standpoint. She made me promise at an early age to understand that I was playing games only, not to be acted out in real life. All it is is a game, not a tool to kill somebody with. Kids arent going to go and string up little Billy from a tree and paint him blue while stabbing him. They're just going to play it. Thats it, no consequences.
